We are reaching the time of year when outdoor activities are on the rise. From festivals, sporting events, family reunions, and weddings, having the right number of portable toilets can make a big difference in the success of your event. When you have large groups of people located a distance away or without access to the usual indoor amenities, it’s important to determine the correct ratio of portable toilets per person.
When you’re planning your event, the catering, venue, and music typically take priority on the to-do list. Often left for last, planning restroom accommodations is one of the most important parts of finalizing your event planning and should not be overlooked. The number of portable toilets you’ll need will vary based on several factors which should be considered ahead of time. You should also consider where the portable restroom is going to be placed.
Some factors that impact the number of portable toilets per person include the number of attendees, event duration, the female/male ratio and whether alcohol is served. In fact, if alcohol is served, studies show that guests use the restrooms more frequently and therefore there should be a ten percent increase in available restrooms.
And while you want your portable toilets in close range to your event, you don’t want them too close. It’s important to take time to map out the optimal location and amount of space that you may require to ensure there aren’t any surprises when it’s setup time.
For special events, PSAI (Portable Sanitation Association International) recommends that you base the number of portable toilets per person on the average time of the event as well as the number of attendees. They compiled a special event chart that can be viewed here. Their data suggests that one unit (or portable toilet) will provide approximately 200 uses, with four hours average between use.
In regards to smaller events, if you have fifty people or less there should be one portable toilet provided for every interval of four hours. In other words, if you have forty-six people attending a six-hour long event, there should be two portable toilets. And don’t forget to order some hand sanitizing stations!
There are many other instances other than entertainment-style events in which you may need to provide people with access to a portable restroom. Many construction and agricultural businesses need to provide their employees with restrooms, especially when many of their projects are off-site.
OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) requires that there be at least one portable or available toilet per every twenty or fewer employees. If your business has more than twenty but less than 200 workers, OSHA requires that there be at least one toilet and one urinal for every forty workers.
